The not-long-enough weekend

I gave up planning outdoor activities, in or out of town, for the May 24th weekend years ago. Even if May has been nice up to that point, the long weekend is guaranteed to include rotten weather, and this year deviated from the norm not at all. Friday night it poured buckets; Bob didn't go out, so we made BIG progress with cleaning up the study.

Saturday was perhaps a bit better on and off, but I had to walk to the university for a fillin group class with Sean, and despite wearing my full waterproof suit, every exposed bit, including inside the violin case around the zipper, was soaked. (On that trip was when I took Rainy city and Mezzanine at the music school. We continued to clean and throw out junk that afternoon, and paused upon deciding that filing was the next big job.

Sunday was still cold and damp, but precipitation was reduced to the odd drizz. The youth group led the service, which meant that it was both well-done and short. We dropped off the girls to play at the Barrowmans' house (Suzuki friends, with whom Jean arranged the playdate pretty much all on her own) and had dinner at Pateys'. After retrieving the girls to the contentment of television and snacks at Nanny and Poppy's, we checked out the new Dominion for a couple of hours. Supper was at Pateys'; I finally got a chance to indoctrinate Dr. P into Flickr and left him happily tagsurfing.

Monday started with a delightfully late morning, one of so few these days. We went out to John and Vicky's garden party - not in the sense of frilly frocks and crown-and-anchor, but in the sense of dig-in-the. They had a truckload of dirt delivered to their driveway Saturday that had to be moved, and by the time we left it was two-thirds gone. The Hoods, Bauers, and Barretts came, brought kids, dug dirt, ran wheelbarrow races, and ate hanegers and hoddogs. Bob built more stone steps like the ones he did last year; Shelley and I moved the side flowerbed to the front decorative lawn-bog, complete with many enormous rocks and a tarp liner to add bogginess. Many dogsticks were thrown, mudpies made, and pretty rocks added to various collections. If you're a flickr-friend or family, follow this link.

That evening was, as luck would have it, the only night we could swing babysitting from the Pateys, for which we were long overdue. Contrary to the rest of the world's opinion, we saw Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy instead of Revenge of the Sith, and found it very funny and true to the books. The Factory Floor was worth seeing on the big screen. We had a desperate time finding a place to eat, since it was the stat holiday of the long weekend, so we got salads and sandwiches at Pizza Experts and movie food in the movie. Newsflash: for an extra dollar they'll mix in your Glosettes or Hershey bits or what have you (that you purchase separately) into your hot popcorn. Talk about needing to be hosed off afterward - we passed and went for plain, thank you. A lovely evening, although I think we'll just have to sneak down to Giovanni Caboto's (our first choice) for lunch some weekend soon - PE's pannini does nothing for the Quest For A Great Roasted Vegetable Sandwich. The Sprout, a new veggie cafe, is opening soon in the old Classic Cafe spot, so we'll try to go there this summer too.
