Brigadier Effie Patey was Bob's grandmother. I met her only after she and Bob's grandfather had grown old, and he died a year after we were married; she spent most of her remaining years at Glenbrook. From the many, many stories I've heard, she was a remarkable woman, tireless in her efforts to serve others in the tiny outports where she and her husband worked with the Salvation Army as officers and nurse and schoolteacher respectively. Her and Cecil's biggest tribute, I think, is the fact that all seven of their children and most of their grandchildren are thoroughly educated and working in professional fields, and are fine human beings to boot. All seven and several grandchildren came this weekend to wish her goodbye, many traveling home from afar. And the brass band played and we clapped and sang the old Army hymns for her, just as she had wished.
